Remember a post earlier this spring about an exciting new plug-in hybrid sports coupe from BMW being called the i8? This innovative EV recently made its official debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show earlier this month and to the delight of many, it is unlike any other model in the new BMW lineup.
The Bavarian automaker has been focusing its efforts on the development of Project i. The goal of this endeavor was to create a sub-brand of electric vehicles that are lightweight, eco-friendly and would provide drivers with a way to contribute to the mobility and sustainability movement, especially in urban areas. We've already discussed the exciting i3 and today will be focusing on its sporty counterpart, the i8.
The BMW i8 is a 2+2 car with a style that draws influence from the classic look of a sports car but is blended with ultramodern flairs like an avant-garde interior design, lithium-ion high-voltage battery with liquid cooling and usable capacity of 5 kWh, immaculate aerodynamics, a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic Life module passenger cell ,even weight distribution thanks to a low center of gravity and more.
As for power, the revolutionary i8 draws from a special dual-motor system that is comprised of a 1.5-liter Twin Turbo engine that sends power to the back wheels, and an eDrive electric motor that is responsible for the front wheels.
The ground-breaking I8 is scheduled to arrive in Ganley BMW's Middleburg Heights, OH showroom in early 2014, so stay tuned to our blog for more details.
