Did you know that luxury automaker BMW is currently developing a new, 1.5-liter, turbocharged three-cylinder engine for its upcoming BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports coupe, which will hit production lines next year? It's just one of the eco-friendly engines the brand has created recently, and it produces between five and 15 percent less CO2 emissions than the brand's current four-cylinder, as it's basically a six-cylinder lopped in half.
Other recent eco-friendly engine developments include a BMW 5-Series with an available 2.0=liter, four-cylinder engine, a BMW X5 SUV featuring a diesel engine, and a BMW 7-Series hybrid executive sedans. BMW has also been testing a limited number of all-electric BMW 1-Series coupes.
Several models are beginning to get diesel options that were recently limited to European drivers. For example, the new BMW 3-Series lineup with receive a diesel engine option this fall. The engine runs on ultra-low-sulfur diesel, and should get about 32 miles per gallon in the city/ 45 mpg on the highway. Horsepower is 180, with 280 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive and wagon variants will be offered.
